A return to the artisanal
A nod to individuality
An ode to the Filipino heritage
Blithe Sanchez is a small, independent brand of handcrafted bags by Blithe Sanchez-O'Driscoll, a Filipino designer-maker based in Manila. Returning to the near-forgotten art of making things, Blithe designs and makes each bag from scratch using both traditional and mechanical methods. The bag pattern pieces are hand-drawn, cut and sewn together by hand and machine to ensure durability. Each design element- from the leather straps to the tiniest rivets and eyelets- is manually prepared, finished, and set. This creative process involves meticulous attention to details, making each Blithe Sanchez bag a truly well-crafted piece.
The artisan nature of Blithe Sanchez bags means no two are exactly alike. Each bag has its own unique print, even if it shares the same design as another. This stamp of individuality is enhanced by the brand's decision to carry only a small inventory of each bag design which are available mainly on trade fairs .
Blithe Sanchez honours Filipino artistry and ingenuity
through its use of indigenous and natural materials sourced from different parts of the Philippines. Its trademark ABACA totes are made of poly-abaca hand-woven by the women of Igbaras, Aklan, and Iloilo. The local ethnic weaves and T'nalak featured in most of the bags are from the Benguet Province and Cordillera Region, while the leather used as trim and accents are from the National Capital Region. By infusing traditional materials with a modern design aesthetic, Blithe Sanchez creates contemporary bags with a distinctive Filipino touch.
